Our Coalition
Safety Solutions Mission Statement:
It is the mission of The Safety Solutions Coalition to be focused on improving the safety of Cedar City residents. We will design a plan to reduce / prevent substance abuse among the youth in our community. Together, as partners, we will organize and develop plans and programs to coordinate our community’s anti-drug efforts. The result is a comprehensive, community-wide approach to substance abuse and its related problems. Our implementation process will include an evaluation of what projects are successful and others that need to be reviewed. We continue as a coalition to provide safety and educational resources for youth of all ages.
What our Coalition does:
The Iron County Safety Council Coalition is a group of concerned citizens and parents intent on keeping the youth of their community drug free. We target the district Scout Expo each year to educate children and youth about drug safety, bike safety and water safety etc. We target youth alcohol and drug abuse by educating in the schools and implementing programs such as the “Every 15 Minutes” program. We teach DARE in our schools and work with administrators to prevent drug and alcohol abuse among our youth.
Needs in the community we address:
We address youth alcohol and drug abuse in our community. We also address safety and security issues. We organize the annual “Shop with a Cop” event. This includes fundraising efforts to provide a happy Christmas to many at risk youth and children. This increases their self esteem and creates a long lasting bond with local law enforcement and public safety personnel. This year we were able to affect the lives of more than 80 youth.
Who we serve:
We primarily serve the youth and children of our community, but we also reach out to parents and adults by educating and supporting them. We firmly believe that prevention is the key and that through proper education and support, we CAN make a difference!
Our Key Groups and volunteers:
We are comprised of representatives from the Cedar City Police Department, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Enoch City Police Department, Southern Utah University Police Department, Cedar City Fire Department, Iron County Ambulance, Iron County Search and Rescue, Iron County School District, Paiute Indian Tribe and Valley View Medical Center. We have several volunteers that assist with our coalition. Many of them sit on our committee. We have PTA members, parents, civic and religious leaders and medical professionals.
How we have been successful:
We have been able to impact our youth with education and interaction. Since we have received the Drug Free Communities Grant we have completed another “Every 15 Minutes” program at Cedar High School, taken 66 youth to the Power Of Prevention Conference put on by Utah Council for Crime Prevention, provide for 66 youth with our “Shop with a Cop” program, and we are able to bring 6 youth to the National Youth Leadership Initiative in Washington D.C..
